I've used ZoneAlarm's free (for private use) basic Firewall for over a year or so and it works very well. Easy to setup and updates are easy to install. You can find information here:

They say it's basic but I find it actually is quite robust. So far (knocking on wood), I haven't had any hits. Oh, a lot of attempts, especially on the cable modem connection in Zurich but in Fribourg, I get maybe two attempts per week. In Zurich, I get about 10 per minute! But never any hits.
