I am a newbie, but I believe I have isolated a problem and need help.
I have a 5 PC home network. All machines are hard wired through a 8
port linksys router with current firmware. All machines are XP or XP
PRO. All machines can browse the internet through via DSL. Computer
"A" can see the MSHOME network, but cannot browse it. No PCs can be
seen. However, in SAFEMODE NETWORKING, computer "A" can see and
browse the other machines. At first I thought it was a problem with
PC "A" and went through various sofware steps to eliminate potential
conflicts on that PC. Nothing worked. Last night, I plugged a laptop
into PC "A's" CAT. 5 jack and guess what? Exactly the same problem.
The laptop can browse the internet but cannot see the other PCs on the
network except in SAFE MODE NETWORKING!!. The other PCs can see each
other and browse the internet, but they cannot see PC "A". I have
checked and rechecked all the LAN settings on all the PCs to eliminate
the obvious stuff. I am now thinking that I have a wiring problem
with PC "A" that allows it to browse but not see the other PCs. Is
that a possible solution? The whole thing seems weird because I have
eliminated the problem as being a PC "A" problem because the exact
thing happens with the laptop when it is used at PC "A's" Cat. 5 jack.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea... maybe. You might look at your tcp/ip settings to make
sure you have netbios enabled over tcp/ip selected under WINS. If the
netbios naming convention is not implemented, it is possible that you can
browse the internet, but not certain computers on the LAN. Usually runing
the home networking wizard will correct that problem.
Once you make some changes, drop to a DOS command line and type ipconfig
/release and then wait a sec and then type ipconfig /renew. You might check
out your firewall settings too, just to make sure you have your local LAN
included as trusted computers ... or if you have your computer in stealth
mode.

Dean,

When you plug the laptop into PC "A"s Cat 5 jack, are you using the cable you
usually use with PC "A"? Or the one usually used with the laptop? You've got
an 8 port router, and only 5 PCs. Try putting PC "A" on one of the unused
ports.

Learn to munge properly, to keep yourself a bit safer.
