2 netbook xp problems

My Acer netbook w/XP has changed.

1. It now does some kind of scan or something when it returns from stand-by
or hibernate or shutdown, etc. A line appears that shows a propeller made
of | / - \ spinning, preceding by a few "....". The time I have to wait is
annoying, but does not seem to cause a problem.

2. I am having trouble installing printers. My Brother MFC-420CN is on
it's own Ethernet wire, and other W7 laptops see it, but my XP netbook
doesn't.

TIA, Paul

Hi Paul,

The spinning lines sounds like something the netbook is doing, not the
OS. Have you checked the Acer site?

Print out a configuration page from your printer, and note the IP
address. It is usually best to assign them a static IP (one that
doesn't change, and one that is either above or below the DHCP address
range. If the printer was installed out of the box, it isn't set as a
static IP, but gets its IP from the DHCP server. You may have to look
at the configuration of your router to figure that out. But after
you've done that, go to "Add a printer" and select "A network
printer...", and then "Create a new port" which should be a Standard
TCP/IP, and then enter the IP address of the printer. You should have
the printer driver CD handy to complete the process, or install it prior
to adding the printer.

I solved it.I had two USB devices ahead of the hard disk in the bios. I
changed the hard disk back to 1st and the problem went away.
