Device manager shows two identical plug and play monitors. I assume this is
not right considering that I have never had a dual monitor setup of any
sort. I have a guess as to why two instances are shown. If it's important,
I will give you my guess. Anyways what is the proper way to remove the
duplicate. My system is XP Pro.

I was just browsing thru device manger and happened to notice it. Are you
asking what my guess is as to why two are shown? Do you know the proper way
to remove the duplicate?

There may be no way to remove it *if* your video card is capable of
supporting dual monitors (even if it is just an s-video output.) It is
supposed to be there - awaiting you to plug one in.

That's why I asked what I did... You (I assumed) must have been having an
issue that you related to this entry. It has always been there (more than
likely) and it takes up no space (physical) on your computer - so it must
have been causing you an issue for you to think you needed to remove it - so
I wondered what that might be.

If you are having no issue that prompts you to remove it - and chances are
there is no removal for it where it won't just come back after a restart -
then you should just leave it be and know the option is there should the
need arise. ;-)

I have onboard video on an intel board. I expect it has dual monitor
support. The board seems to have everything under the sun. Do you know how
I can check that?

Well I assumed you wanted to know why I thought there were two (the guess I
alluded to in my OP). So I'll tell you. Afterall. there's nothing to do
here on a Saturday afternoon while I wait for the Red Sox to complete the
second third of their ensuring the Indians will have no more baseball come
Monday. When I first got this machine in June it was the first XP machine I
had ever used. My old machine was becoming unusable due to hardware issues.
I wanted to get all my data off the old machine onto XP. I decided to buy a
KVM switch so I could run both machines at once and transfer via networking.
It seemed to be the easiest and least expensive way. That worked fine.
However, when I first brought up XP, the KVM was connected to the old
machine and remained that way until I had transferred the data. I
originally had a couple of issues with XP. In talking with my "support", I
told them about the KVM thing and they thought it might have caused the
problems I had. Whether it did or not I'll never know. I fixed the issues
myself and those issues have not returned. Anywho, since one of the issues
involved the mouse that was naturally connected to the KVM and because my
"support" had told me the issues may have been caused by my using a KVM when
I first loaded (and activated) XP, the fact that I noticed two monitors led
to my post. Something about the monitor being attached to two machines and
a problem possibly being caused by a KVM and the fact that the monitor has
dual use when it's attached to a KVM made me thing that seeing two of them
might be related to the KVM. If the preceding reasoning makes sense to you,
you may be just as nutty as me which could be good or bad. I ain't telling.
If this is normal for a board that supports dual monitors, it's not a
problem I guess.

I have no issue with the monitor that I'm aware of but for noticing two of
them. I have other issues but they are not related to the monitor. They
are nothing an average user would even notice. I might not have either but
for poking around the innards of XP Pro. If you like I could ask an OT
question for this thread. Let me know please.

Dual monitors is not my thing at the moment. Not enough room. I am using
an eight year old 15 inch CRT. Poor me. ;-)

Yeah but they got Manny and Manny being Manny means many men (and women and
children and dogs and cats and anything else that happens to reside in

Actually he states "monitors" not "display adapters". If his board has 2
display adapters they will show up, but for two monitors to appear he needs
to have had two monitors connected at some time.

It could be he has connected the same monitor to different adapters at some
time, and the non active monitor is being remembered.

As you say unless it is causing problems there is no need wasting any mental
energy over it.

You can have one adapter that does dual displays and both monitors will show
up whether or not you have them connected. However - in Display
Properties --> Settings, one of the two monitors will be 'inactive' and
greyed out.
