I am working with an Emachine T3065 with XP Home. Everything seems to work
great except one problem I am having. When you boot up to the desktop, the PC
seems to freeze for about 2 minutes. You can move the mouse and click on
icons, but nothing will happen until this 2 minute freeze is up. After 2
minutes everything you have clicked on pops up all at once. After the 2
minute freeze the PC works great. I have used the restore CD to try and fix
this problem but it did not help. All help appreciated – thanks.

Your desktop has not fully initialized. Some computers are faster than
others (the reason for the big difference in the price between the lowest
cost units and the highest cost units). It depends a lot upon what you have
loading during startup. It depends a lot on what is running on your computer
that you have no knowledge of.

Install a GOOD firewall - one that blocks unwanted outbound traffic as well
as unwanted inbound traffic. Then when something tries to connect, out of
the ordinary, you will be flagged. At that point you can disallow that
particular instance either once or permanently.

You will want to keep your system free of infestations of viruses, spyware,
dialers, key
loggers etc.

HINT: Don't ever go clicking things just because a web site, e-mail, popup
or
rogue desktop background tells you to! If you are not 101% certain what an
action will
do - don't perform that action.

And exercise control over your clicking finger!

You know how some networked pcs will boot up much slower if the cable is
pulled out as windows is trying its best to connect to the network its
used to connecting to.

It's my understanding that the network is loaded before the desktop
first appears.

But, what if you use lots of usb devices or even a usb hub, or perhaps
just a complicated usb device, and now lets say none of them are
connected. Will/would this cause a hugely noticible lag after you first
get to the desktop eg the time when most usb devices are generally
loaded?

I would have to test that out Plato. With the exception of my
mouse/keyboard, I turn on a USB device when I need it. Therefore they don't
interact during bootup. I would have to turn on my printer and external USB
drives and plug in my thumb drive prior to boot to see exactly how it
affects the boot time.

An interesting little project that can be documented with the use of my
electronic stop watch.

I'm just thinking, lets say you have a usb hard drive that you regularly
save data to and fro. Perhaps even have some applications that you use
on it. You're talking registry entries, perhaps entries in recent docs,
etc.

I wish I was able to wear jewelery. When I got married I wore my wedding
ring but often came home and it was gone, ie came off in my workglove.
So I stopped wearing it. A month ago I tried to wear it again and now
it's lost forever. I had a gold necklace, was working on a car and the
fan got it. I had a watch and was skipping stones and the watch went out
to sea. I just have no luck. Perhaps I should try piercing items to my
face so I dont lose them.
