2 (maybe 3) Repair Install Problems

After an earlier repair install (XP Home), WMP 10 got messed up and
wouldn't roll back, so I was advised to try another repair install. I
just did that and now have two or maybe three problems for which I'd
like to ask advice:

1) After installing all the Windows updates, Windows Installer 3.1 won't
take and the yellow shield keeps coming up (just like it's been known
to get stuck with Windows Defender beta 2).

2) WMP 10 (or 9) still won't install, rollback or run. Is there any way
to get rid of it (and install it again) short of a new full install?

3) During the repair install there were the following error messages
for files that wouldn't install, though they are present. My question
is whether this is something I have to deal with or if the updates would
have solved them.

- Com+ set up error, C:\Windows\System32\catsrv.dll
- C:\Windows\System32\inetcomm.dll
- C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msoe.dll
- C:\Program Files\CommonFiles\System\wab32.dll

Thanks,
Gene

Problem 1 now apparently solved by installing WI 3.1's file directly,
rather than via Windows Update. That leaves 2 and 3.

What was the reason for the original Repair Install? A Repair Install
doesn't always fix underlying problems. Failure to copy files during
any type of install often is caused by hardware problems. Could be bad
CD, bad optical drive, failing RAM or hard drive, etc.

Without knowing what your original problems were, I can't guess except
to say either you have bad hardware and/or the system was too damaged
for a Repair Install to work.

Do hardware troubleshooting:

If you have bad hardware, replace it.

If the hardware is all good, back up your data and do a Clean Install of
Windows. Install drivers and programs from installation media, restore
data from backups.

The reason for the original repair install was that after installing a
new hard drive, Windows wouldn't start after the copy over (using West.
Digital's software). The optical drives work fine; one is a new DVD.

Prior to this, after a Norton NIS uninstall and a bad experience with
Panda at the turn of the year, I was having Windows problems
with the old HD. MS support tried to help, but at least in part failed
to guide me properly (they wanted clean install when WinExpl was
crashing w/o ever mentioning that Context handlers and such could be
the problem). However, one thing that MS couldn't figure out was why
after the Norton/Panda problem the regular modem always showed an error
(yellow flag) in Device Mgr, even after uninstal/reinstalling device.
With the new HD and repair install, the modem is still flagged.
They threw their hands up and again said, 'clean install.' Hope that's
clear. Thanks.

Yes, that's very clear and I thank you for taking the time to explain.
In your situation, I would just do a clean install. I'm sorry that
isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but with all those problems it is
no wonder the Repair Install didn't work for you.

You're right, it's not the desired answer, but so be it. Thanks.
