I am installing Windows XP Professional on a new hard drive. The
screen says "Please wait while Setup formats the partition." It took
about 3 hours to get 70% complete, and in the last 24 hours has only
managed to get to 72% complete. Is this an issue?

New motherboard Asus A7N8X Deluxe. Bios has detected everything ok.

Possibly a bad hard drive.
Power off, reseat the IDE cable at both ends.
Go to the hard drive manufacturers website and get their hard drive
diagnostics.

What format, NTFS or FAT32? What size hard drive, how many
partitions?

Should only take 1/2 hour total.

If (by some odd chance) you are trying to install XP using a dos boot disk
by running
winnt from the i386 folder...you need to use a bootdisk which loads
smartdrv...
