I had to re-install my operating system and restore my data and now when I go
into the address book I first get the message "contacts folder associated
with this address list could not be opened" and in the drop down list I have
Contacts listed twice; in the properties it lists one as in Personal Folders
and the good one in Personal Folders New. How can I get rid of the 1st one or
make the 2nd one the default?
In the folders list I also have 2 sets of identical Personal Folders New and
would like to get rid of one but can't close either one.

We have no idea what you actually did, but you obviously corrupted your
Outlook profile. Create a new one.

Thanks. If I create a new profile (not sure how to do that yet) won't the existing folders still be there? I don't want to lose all my messages and contacts by making a wrong move!
