I'm about to start some development whose 1st basic release might be around
july.
I was wondering about using .NET 2.0, is it likely to be available as a
final release at that time (begining of july)?

In theory before Dec 31st - if not they will have to rename the next version of Visual Studio and SQL Server.

I don't think anyone can give guarantees beyond that. However, you can get a go live license with beta 2.

Maybe Microsoft should name it 2006 at the beginning.

I would bet around the September - October time frame, due to the number of
events during that time, but there is not set date, so it could be as late
as December with the current push.
