19" or 20" TFT Samsung vs. Dell

I have finally narrowed down my search for the LCD. Originally I was
looking at 19" LCDs and in this category I like the Samsung 930/940b
with 700:1 and 8ns. However, recently I have stumbled upon rebates for
the Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP 20" LCD which has 1600x1200 (19" has
1280x1024), 16ns, 400:1. With the rebates it is $430 where the Samsung
is $350. It is not much of a price difference considering a long-term
purchase of a monitor.

However, the 2001FP is nearly 2-years old, it has mixed reviews, and
the specs are not as good as the Samsung. I know there is also the
2005FPW, but its not on sale (price now is about $550 which is high out
of my range) I know that regular Windows apps will benefit from the
higher resolution, but I also extensively play Flight Simulator 2004,
sometimes Call of Duty, etc.

In your opinion, which of the two monitors would you get in terms of
quality.
Would playing the games at higher resolution (FS2004) give lesser
performance (FPS)? The system running the LCD is new and high-specs
(Nvidia 7-series, 256mg RAM)

What is most important to me is picture quality for FS2004 and Windows
apps. The Samsung looks wonderful, the Dell I obviously cannot see
since its mail-order. In your opinion, what choice would you make?

Kind regards,
George B.

I think you mean 8ms, not 8ns. I believe the faster the response, the
narrower the viewing angle so don't let 8ms necessarily be the one you
choose.

Too high (see below).

If that is your attitude then get a Viewsonic. They are the best
monitors made. If you get twice the service life for a few extra
bucks, then it is worth it.

Check out Directron at http://www.directron.com/18lcd.html

They have a Viewsonic VG910s 19" 1280 x 1024, w/ Speakers for $378.

http://www.directron.com/vg910b.html

You cannot go wrong with a Viewsonic. I do not trust Samsung nor do I
trust Dell when it comes to specialty items like an LCD monitor,
especially at such a high price.

I am currently using a Viewsonic G810 Graphic Series 19" CRT. I got it
for $125 refurbished - I believe it was used at Compaq. It has given
me several years of service thus far. When it comes time to replace it
I am getting a Viewsonic 19" LCD like the ones at Directron.

I'm running dual Dell 2405 FPW (24" widescreen) LCDs and I LOVE them.
Our 42" Plasma is a Dell and it has worked flawlessly.
I've had two Viewsonic 21" graphics series CRTs and they were "ok".
I've had various Samsung products, including one 21" CRT and it was great.
I have a LOT of confidence in both Dell and Samsung products.
The other poster may have had problems with Dell or Samsung or heard bad
things but I've heard only good. And I didn't think Viewsonic was that great
a monitor nowadays from the reviews I've read.

I read the thread, and there's nothing definitive pointing to the monitor
being the problem. He just describes some "jaggy lines". Impossible to say
what's causing it, or if there even is a problem, and he just doesn't have
something screwed in his settings, or elsewhere in his system. Doesn't say
what software he sees the problem in either. I always take posts like that
with a grain of salt. Might have a problem, might not.

I have a Samsung 930B and I'm very happy with it. Great picture quality and
brightness. Zero ghosting, in anything.

RF.

I went out and got the 930B. I still have some time to return it, in
case there is convincing enough reason for the Dell 2001FP. The 930B
looked bad at the store. When I got at home, it didn't look great. I
ran the auto-configure settings, and now it looks wonderful, much
better than my old Viewsonic VG175. It's brigther and crisper, contrast
is much improved.

Haven't tried DVI yet, still waiting for the new computer with cable.

You will have to let it sit in the same place so it can adjust to the
Earth's magnetic field. The degausser takes care of most of it but
there is a residual effect left from the position at the store that
has to decay away. You may notice some color bleed at the far right of
the screen which does not go away when you degauss. It will go away in
1-3 months.

Don't forget the possible effects of aetheric phlogisten causing pixel
randomization when the display is rotated more than 180 degrees from
true north. Unless the Samsung comes with an anti-phlogisten grid
installed.
