I want to install a 185GB second hard disk (D drive) to my
1.6GHz AMD athlon machine. It recognises it within the
BIOS but not in Win 98? Do i need to partition?

You are posting in the XP newsgroups... do you want to install this drive in
a XP PC or a 98 PC?

It must have at least one partition and be formatted. Use
disk management to set it up.

This is an XP newsgroup! Windows 98 does not support this large of a drive.

James - I'm /never/ getting in a plane with you - your eyesight's terrible!
;o) It would appear that the OP has mistaken this for a Windows 98 group -
disk management is an NT-only applet.

Download and create a bootdisk from bootdisk.com and run fdisk and format on
that disk. Without a formatted partition Win 98 will not see the disk.
