I've bought a monitor that has 1680x1050 res for my XP pro machine. My
graphics card doesn't support that res natively but does allow me to add any
custom resolution I like. If I add it the display comes up all garbage and
the monitor says it's running at 1280x1024. The card is an nvidia Gforce4
MX440 and is running the monitor through DVI. Is there anything I can do?

Have you downloaded the latest drivers for it from the nVidia site? If you
have done that, and it still won't work then you'll need to upgrade the
video card.

Check with the nVidia web site for any driver and/or firmware updates
for your specific card model. And if it is not an nVidia brand card,
but one produced by some other company using nVidia chips then check
with their web site.

The monitor is a wide-screen monitor, and your video card apparently
supports only the old standard aspect ratio.

You can try upgrading the video card driver as others have suggested, but my
guess is that you will need to buy a new video card to support the monitor
properly.

I'll have a look into new drivers. Insterestingly the card does support the
res. I tried it last night though 15 pin vga instead of DVI and it worked
straight off. Someone told me they had similar troubles and had to do
something odd to get it to work through DVI such as setting refresh rate or
freq on video card.

Sorry, I don't know how, but you might try contacting the card manufacturer.

You're not completely wrong, I might need to buy a new card if I want to use
DVI. I'd prefer to get a pci-e card so I might need to buy a whole computer.

I'll exhaust all other avenues first such as google. This doesn't seem to be
a rare problem, there are 2 people at my work (out of 25) who've experienced
the same problem. Someone here got the same monitor and when I saw it
working I asked how they got it working, unfortunately their response was
the same as mine, to not use DVI. Another colleague said he had the same
problem with a similar res and solved it but can't remember how.
