I have been running W2000 (SP4) happily for many months.
For no apparent reason I have started to get the following
message at boot up: "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The
system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and
Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application."

The best I could find in Support was Q305521 following
which I expanded autoexec.nt from the CD into the correct
folder. It was missing when I checked before the
expansion. However this has made no difference and I still
get the error message.

Help would be appreciated. RodneyF

The second suggestion is the one I have tried.

The first suggestion tells me to contact my system
administrator - but that's me!!

Oh, dear! I don't think this is going to be very easy.

Check: http://support.microsoft.com/default...roduct=win2000

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=142026

Long thread but seems helpful: http://www.webuser.co.uk/cgi-bin/for...b=6&o=93&part= (it says XP but bet it works with W2K)

and http://forums.techguy.org/archive/in.../t-265532.html

and for the anti-virus conspiracy members, check: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com...howtopic=18100

Keep us informed.

And always try the MS KB first before posting.
The answer is probably already posted.

The problem seems to be that whenever I reboot the PC the
file autoexec.nt has been deleted. Replacing it solves the
problem whilst the PC is on but it recurs. My concern is
to understand what is deleting the file.

Hi

Could be a trojan or something similar, e.g.
TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a, more about this here:
