I have been trying to install AVG 6 from Grisoft to aid
in my battle against viruses. My Norton doesn't seem to
be working. I have downloaded the free version, saved
it, then opened to install. It will start to install
then stops & gives me this message

In blue across the top it says
16 BIT WINDOWS SUBYSYTEM

In the screen it says
C:\\WINDOWS \SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT
This system file is not suitable for MS-DOS and Microsoft
Windows application. Choose close to terminate the
application.
Close Ignore

What does this mean & how do I install this program.
Thanks for any help

Do you get daily Norton updates to your Norton virus program, not a good
idea to run two virus programs at same time. Why do you think Norton is not
working...?

Yes, I run daily updates. Norton found a virus but said
it couldn't delete it & the only way I could close the
window was to restart the computer. I was told when I
had trouble getting rid of a virus before to use another
one...by Microsoft. Anyway, my brother & Mom both have
them on theirs & both have had problems with Norton not
catching a virus & it being spread on their computer & to
others. I really don't trust it any more. So back to my
original question...what does this window mean & how do I
get rid of it to install the program?

I've got the same problem. In the beginning, I thought there were some
settings problems. now I change my mind because of this message, I do
think it's a virus...
My computer got infected by something like install2.exe and trapped to
Trend micro PC Cillin 2004, after several cycles of click offs, I did
end up with this message when I tried to run a DOS-based program....
Thanks
Jack

Do a google search on this. I found an interesting discussion at:

Also try:

TexE2U says Colin's answer works great!!!

Try logging on to the site below, and downloading
XP_Fix.EXE
It took me literaly hours to sort this problem out,
and was cured in seconds after I had found out what to
do!!!

Some believe it is an SP2 upgrade problem:
Rock believes otherwise and has provided this info and
link:

"This has nothing to do with SP2, This problem occurs in
SP1 and earlier as well. There are a variety of
things that cause damage to or can delete the autoexec.nt
file. One of these is a trojan.
Scan your system for malware otherwise the problem could
come back."
See this link for info.

Thanks for the good info Rock.
Sorry for the confusion.
