16 Bit Icons and Colours at 32 Bit Depth?

I have just noticed that I am running at 32 Bit colours and that all my
icons have changed themselves to their 16 bit alternatives. Why is this? It
seems to do this at random, sometimes at 16 bit, sometimes 32 bit. It
sometimes stays for a few days, or sometimes until I simply reboot. Why? It
seems to make no sense. I've gone back to 16 bit colour depth and back up to
32 bit, to no avail. Has anyone got a solution, or at the least an
explanation?
