I'm trying to add a firewire pci card to my old pIII/350
that was built in '98. Even though i'm running xp pro,
the plug and play won't detect and manual addition
through control panel won't detect either. any ideas on
whether the mb is too outdated to recognize this device?
or something else?

I'm having a similar problem using a Belkin FireWire Card. However mine did not come with a CD, just a manual. The manual says to use the "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" driver, but my computer isn't detecting it. So I try to download the driver off the net (searched Yahoo), and I try to install it manually, I got an error when trying to do this. The error was "There was a problem installing the following device : PCI Controlle, this maybe be due to the fact that the driver was Windows 95 or older." The driver I tried to install was a Windows 98 driver. Any advice?

Get a Windows XP driver.

Install the driver THEN install the PCI card.

Jim thanks for your help. I got the problem resolved. I ended up downloading a driver from driverguide.com. I finally found an XP driver, after digging around for a good 25 minutes on the net. I'm posting the link for the guy who origionally made this post back on the fifth or anyone else having problems finding a compatible driver. Just a heads up though, you're going to have to sign up for one of those "free/sell your soul" adverstising things. I just listed one of accounts I sacrifice for spam, just in case. It's down towards the bottom of the screen under "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller Driver (6)" Just make sure you grab the XP one (there are several listed) and follow the instructions listed there. Thanks again.
