What kind of video controller does the Dell have? Is the
display connection analog or digital?
Custom/wide aspect resolutions can sometimes be added
to a video driver, depending on make and model of video
controller. E.g. by modifying the NV4_DISP.INF file for
Nvidia controllers prior to installing the driver.
But if the display is not returning EDID information that it
can accept wide aspect resolutions, it won't use these
custom resolutions. The only option in that case is to
modify the cable, and remove the DDC data line (pin 7 if
it's a digital cable). See:
