100% processor usage problem

Hello,
I don't know where else to turn regarding this
problem, so I thought I would try here. I have a 1.7ghz
P4, Via mbd, 120G Hd,128mb video card, and 1 Gig of ram.
Within 30 seconds of my machine booting up, task manager
is showing cpu usage at 100%. I have downloaded all
updates from Msft and all the latest drivers. I have no
viruses and nothing running in the background, (it even
does it in safe mode.) I even got a msft update from
warp2.net that is supposed to address the 100% cpu
problem, but it didn't help. The only thing I havent'
tried is to flash the bios. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks, Ron

which process is running at 100%?

press ctrl+alt+del to go to windows task manager and under
the "processe tab, see which process is running at 100%.

if it is "System idle process" then that is prety normal
(according to microsoft anyway), basically means your cpu
is idle, waiting for instructions. my cpu idle process
normally sits around 90 - 98% most of the time.

No, it is under performance cpu usage that is says 100%
and when it happens the system grinds to a halt. I can't
even cut and paste something its so bad.

if it says 100% under performance, if you click
on "processes" it will list all running processes and in
the column "cpu" it displays the % of cpu usage, you may
find several proceses using different %'s of the cpu(add
them up), if thats the case then you need to establish
what the proceses are and if they are needed at all. a
process needs to be run in order for the cpu to run any %
of usage..

Does the 100% only happen when you are online or does it
happen all the time, if its when you are online, download
adaware from www.lavasoft.de and run it, it could be
spyware running on your pc thats causing the problem.
Let me know.

It happens all the time. I can be doing something as
little as clicking on an mp3 file and it will go right to
100%. I ran spybot and all it found was some tracking
cookies. Under processes, it is explorer.exe that is
showing 99% cpu. It is the only process that is showing
any cpu usage, everything else including system idle
process shows 00 cpu. I don't know what else to do. Could
the processor actually be bad?
