I have a 2.6 GHz processor and about a gig of RAM. But
whenver I just open windows media player or play a song
the computer slows down due to windows media player using
somewhere between 85-95% of system resources, which slows
down other programs. It was working fine for a long time
then suddenly this started to happen. Any ideas?

I just posted a similar problem with a 2.4 ghz on a ASUS
motherboard P4B533 with embedded sound. Hopefully we get
an answer case this is driving me nuts. Sounds like my
problem may be worst than yours as my processor goes to
100% and stays there. Sometimes I have to pull the plug
on the PC. Weird

Oh and by the way I notice that under the processes tab on
task manager that explorer.exe is maxed out at 99%.

Yeah.. I dunno. It actually does go and stay at 100%
usage and I have to kill it through the Task Manager. But
I just noticed that this happens only when Im using the
Media library tab to play my music, instead of just
clicking on the file itself. I dunno.

Well today I went out and picked up a Creative
Soundblaster card to see if it made a difference. Still
have the same problem with Media Player. The
soundblaster comes with it's own player. When I use
that CPU utilization bounces between 0 and 4%. Much
better. Now how do we get Microsoft to fix this ???????

ARgggggg!

The saga continues. I escalated to Microsoft and have
been working with them for about 4 days now, first via
chat and now via e-mail. Once again the problem is when
using Media Player 9 after a little while the CPU usage
goes to 100%. On large (album length) high bit rate
MP3's I can get it to consistently do it in about 90
seconds. Once it is there, if it runs for awhile it is
almost impossible to get the system back and sometimes
have to do a hard power
off.
Working with Microsoft on troubleshooting has been an
interesting process as they tried to identify if I had
any other software processes conflicting with Media
Player. In the end I didn't. Where I am now is they
had me remove Media Player 9 and reinstall it. Same
problem after about 90 seconds the CPU usage goes up to
100% and stays there making system usage for any other
purpose reallllllyyyyy ssslllloooowww.

For those of you that are interested, here is how to
remove Windows Media Player 9 and reinstall it for XP.

Instructions from Microsoft Support

Hello Scott,

I have checked all of the dll files that are loading
under explorer.exe. They are system files that required
by your system with the correct file version.

Based on our current status, I would recommend you
reinstall Windows Media Player as follows:

1. Click Start, click Run, type command and click OK

2. In the command prompt window, type the following
command (exactly, do not even add a space) and press
Enter:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection uninstall 132
c:\windows\inf\wmp.inf

Note: I would like to verify if your system is installed
in drive C. If you have installed Windows Me to other
drive (such as drive D), change c:\windows\inf\wmp.inf to
d:\windows\inf\wmp.inf

3. Restart the computer.

To reinsatll Windows Media Player, please go to the
following web site:

WMP for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx
displaylang=en&categoryid=4

Please try the suggestions shown above and let me know
the results. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
