100% CPU usage

I have a computer running Windows 2000 that has just
started sporadically making a grinding noise and slowing
down. I've noticed that the CPU Usage keeps running up to
100%. I've restarted twice, shutdown completely and still
this is happening. Now it is at 100% and IE is the only
thing I have open. When this started, Outlook 2000 was
the only program open. A few hours ago, this system was
running smoothly. Any suggestions?
