If I buy the latest version of Excel and/or Word, and it says it's for 1
user, does that mean that if I have a desktop and a laptop I can only
install it on one computer?
TIA
Peggy

Yes, unless somewhere in the license is mentioned that you may install it
on more computers but use it on not more than one computer at a time.
Then it could be installed on as many computers as they allow.

I do not know the details of MS licenses.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think it depends on what version you buy and what
country you live in.

http://www.microsoft.com/office/eula/en.mspx

I clicked on the MS Office 2003 Standard Edition

And saw this as part of the EULA:

1.1 Installation and use. You may:
(a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or other
device; and
(b) install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable device for
the exclusive use of the primary user of the first copy of the Software.

Thanks for your quick response Dodo but that is kinda what I am asking. Is
there anyone here who DOES have knowledge or physically have the license
agreement or link to a retail version of it so I can see how many computers
the license allows. Obviously I don't have the product yet and don't want
to buy it to find out.
so my question is:
Does anyone here know what the details of MS licenses are on those two
retail products?
Thanks again.
Peggy

From the License Agreement for Excel 2003:

"...conditions of this EULA:
1.1 Installation and use. You may:
(a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or
other device; and
(b) *install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable
device for the exclusive use of the primary user of the first copy of
the Software.*..."

There you have it... YES you can!

Cheers!

Bruce

PERFECT! Thanks!
And thank you Microsoft for realizing that people need to have software on
their home computer as well as when they are mobile without having to pay
TWICE!

If the version you had bought was the Student and Teacher edition, I believe
you could put it on up to 3 machines :-)
