It's an absolute reference. The $ means that when you copy the formula to
another cell, the item after it remains the same.
eg if you copy a formula down one cell and right one cell, $A$1 remains the
same, $A1 becomes $A2, A$1 becomes B$1 and A1 becomes B2.
