I recently turned on outgoing mail server authentication.
I'm positive I followed the procedure correctly. But
afterwards, I started to have trouble sending e-mail. In
particular, if I press "Send" after composing a message, I
will get an error message, saying:

The operation was cancelled. (Account: 'xyz', SMTP
Server: 'abc.def.uvw', Error Number: 0x800ccc17)

Would appreciate your advice.

That's a really weird error to be getting - it means that the user cancelled
the send. I assume you'd know if you'd cancelled ;-). What version of
Outlook do you have?
