I've seen the same issue raised on 1/25/2007 and the suggested solution was
to reinstall over the current version.

Before proceeding with that, I have two questions:
1. If I'm running McAffee Security do I need the "Defender"?
2. Can both be run at the same time without compatibility problems?

Thanks Engel, from a couple of the posts at the site you suggested I see some
non-compatibility issues between the two security services. Just wondering
if you run either or both and have you had conflicts between the two. Have
you chosen one over the other?

I run both McAfee security center version 7.1 build 7.1.137 and Defender
version 1.1.1593.0 engine version 1.1.2101.0 with no conflicts between the
two. I really like the real time protection offered by Defender for malware.
McAfee's doesn't seem to detect the same things as Defender, because I'll get
alerts from Defender and not McAfee. Other times I'll get alerts from McAfee
and not Defender. I would recomend using both.

The 2009 McAfee consumer products for Windows Vista disable Microsoft Windows
Defender to improve system performance.

If that 'error' message appears, disable Windows Defender from startup
(Start \ Run \msconfig),

or enable Windows Defender (Start \ Run \ services.msc) and then
turn off automatic scanning (in Windows Defender).

I tried both of these steps and I still get the same error message. Any other
ideas?

Here's McAfee phone # 1-800-338-8754. You'll most likely get a person in
India. They will walk you through solving your problem. Windows Defender
needs to be disabled when using McAfee Security Suite 2009.
