I know Defender is still a Beta, but the signatures are old (37 days?). I
try to get them updated, but all I get is the error "0x80004002. No such
interface supported."

I'm wondering if this has something to do with why I can't update XP home
because of the fubared permissions. Any reasons for the message? If this is
the permissions, is there a way to forcibly reset them?

No, it's the permissions that are causing the problems. I realize it now
that I've seen that the Defender updates are comming from the Update site,
and since it keeps telling me that I don't have admin permissions (even
though I'm the only user here) the Defender updates won't work either.

I need to get rid of the permissions all together so I can have control over
my own PC.

You might want to double check the site, I can't seem to access it from my
home PC. I had to google the net to find a version I could download.

The version I did download (0.57.4) seem to have worked. I was able to get
the Defender updates, and auto-update seems to be working as well, though
some of the installs are failing.

That sounds like an improvement--if not perfect--I'm not aware of any
current updates that fail to install--but I know there can be
interactions--so keep going back to AU/WU until all the critical stuff
installs.

In a pinch, if something fails repeatedly, sometimes a manual download and
install works better.

Start here (scroll down)

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

to find the manual download links for a given patch.

Thanks for the feedback--I'll see if I can find a better site to recommend.

I was having this problem, went to the link recommended by Engel.

Checked for Updates (my auto updates was off for some reason) and found that
I needed two updates,

---Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)

After I installed them, Defender Beta 2 seems to be functioning normally.
